Welcome to Herbert Wegner's Webpage
(thanks to Frank Pipal for the English translation)
I've been playing pétanque now for twenty years. This lead me, ten years ago, to start collecting old nailed boules for fun.
I chanced upon my first pair (old sets were made up of two boules) at a flea-market in the South of France. I was struck by the workmanshipand love that must have gone into those old boules. I could appreciate how important a place the game of boules held in the social life of those days.
During my holidays, I started visiting all the flea-markets in the region (without a guidebook) which was an agreeable pastime. My collection grew from month to month.
After a while, I decided to give another meaning to my collection by doing a little research into the history of it. So I've put some of it up on the web to share with you.
I'd be happy to have e-mail correspondence from anyone with information on the history of, and the fabrication of, wooden boules, as well as the names and addresses of private collectors or resellers.
